My Thoughts
I don't really like anime under the action genre since they have the tendency to drag on with so much filler episodes and needless extensions to the plot. I also don't like anime who have hentai like art styles since they tend to be more fan service than substance. I saw the poster for this and was about to not watch this series but when I read the description I found it quite weird and that got me curious, because I like weird stuff, It fascinates me. So I watched episode 1, 30 minutes later I played episode 2 then next thing I knew I was waiting for the next one. Its that good. The premise at first seems weird -- People fighting over half priced food. I know right? Well the protagonist just happened to get caught since he was new to the place and then he gets to be the underdog and stuff. It's cliche but the way they tell and present it is refreshing. It doesn't feel forced nor too corny, and the characters take it seriously like their life depended on those half priced
bentos. There are rules to follow, some secret alliances, cheap tactics, over the top situations, and deep main characters. Wait did I say deep? YES. I also found myself cheering for them to get the half priced food and that is absurd I know but its half priced food! Anyway in order for them to get it they have to fight for it like animals. This is one of the parts where Ben-To shines. The fighting scenes are well animated and well scripted. They aren't hard to follow and very entertaining. This series is really a suprise for me as at first glance looked dull but actually has great characters, plot (cliched but refreshing), and fighting scenes. Anyway this anime won't get any recognition for innovation but because it's entertaining and 3 episodes in they keep throwing this mystery where something bigger is happening here. Overall, its a fun show that strangely has a cliched but unique premise. This show has potential, that is all.
Overall mood while watching: Cheerleader happy.
